Overview
The proposed project is an expansion and modernization of the existing Transco pipeline’s capacity to North Carolina and will increase the natural gas delivery to meet the growing demand for affordable energy in the region. This project will be regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) under the 7(c) pre-filing process to ensure thorough consultation and cooperation with other state, local and federal regulatory agencies and community stakeholders.
Once approved by FERC, the expansion project will add a total of approximately 423,400 dekatherms per day (dt/d) of pipeline capacity to the Transco system by Winter 2024. That’s enough reliable natural gas to meet the needs of nearly 2 million homes in the region.
Background
Williams operates the Transco pipeline, an approximately 10,200-mile natural gas transportation system that extends from south Texas to New York City. The Transco pipeline is the nation’s largest-volume natural gas pipeline system, transporting about 15% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. In 2019, Transco was responsible for the safe and reliable delivery of approximately 91% of the natural gas consumed in North Carolina.
Construction Activities
Construction activities include the construction of a new, all-electric compressor station and upgrades to existing meter stations and compressor stations.
North Carolina Scope of Work
- Upgrades and enhancements to existing meter stations in Iredell, Northampton, and Hertford Counties
- Flow-reversal modifications to Station 155 in Davidson County
Virginia Scope of Work
- Installation of additional all-electric compression at the existing Station 166 in Pittsylvania County
- Construction of a new, all-electric compressor station in Mecklenburg County
Fall 2021: Initial Public Outreach and Begin Pre-File FERC 7(c)
Spring 2022: Target Filing of FERC 7(c) Application
End of 2023/Early 2024: Target Construction Start
Winter 2024: Target In-Service Date
Minimize Impacts
By maximizing the use of the existing transmission corridor, the impact on property owners and the environment will be minimized.
Serve Communities
The expansion project will allow additional natural gas volumes to be transported to North and South Carolina consumers to meet growing demand.
