Keeping your holiday bright

The festive season is almost upon us don’t compromise safety and ruin your holiday spirit.

Below are some safety tips to follow so that when it comes to decking the halls in your home or workplace this holiday season, it really will be easy to get right.

According to 2019 National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) data, nearly 160 house fires per year are sparked by holiday trees. These fires cause an average of three deaths, 15 injuries and $10 million in direct property damage annually.

When choosing a cut tree, bend some of the needles. If they break, the tree is too dry.

Before Holiday Tips

  • After selecting your tree, cut off an extra inch or two of the trunk. The fresh-cut will help the tree absorb water.
  • Place the tree firmly in its stand with plenty of room for water
  • Check the water level daily and add if needed
  • Make sure electrical cords for tree lights aren’t frayed or knotted. Also, check that the lights are for indoor use.
  • Don’t overload electrical outlets
  • Never leave a lighted tree unattended
  • Don’t let the tree block exits or stairs
  • Keep the tree away from portable heaters and other sources of heat

After Holiday Tips

  • Recycle or dispose of the tree when it is dry 
  • Dried-out trees are a fire risk. They should not be in your home or garage or leaning against your home.
  • Make sure all ornaments and decorations have been removed from the tree before disposal or recycling.
